I had mentioned awhile back that I have a new Saturday gig, and it’s not a bad one at that. Friends of mine started-up the Vulcan Motor Club in Chester, NJ (where I hang) and have also recently branched out to Long Island, NY. The club makes a lot more sense than sinking tons of your own dough into buying an exotic– when you join immediately there’s an arsenal of the latest high performance and luxury vehicles at your fingertips, with none of the ownership worries in terms of maintenance, upkeep, depreciation, etc. All you need to worry about is– which car will it be today?
Maybe I’m too “old school” for my own good, but my favorite ride in the fleet is a ’65 Shelby Cobra (replica) fitted with a snarling 565 hp 427 aluminum block V-8. For pure power, torque and thrill it’s the real deal, and a real driver’s car too. Paddle shifters are cool, but I’d rather feel big-block, 4-on-the-floor rumble any day of the week. There are several membership options and new Spring specials, with delivery and pick-up available within 60 miles.
So if this sounds like the rush you’ve been looking for– I can hook that up.

My father passed up a like-new 67 A/C Shelby Cobra back in 69. Asking price $7000; that was all he had to his name so he passed. Still kicking himself.

Not to boast, but since this is a post about dream cars, I take delivery of mine in about 4 weeks. A black-on-black Nissan GT-R. There is a Lexus IS-F in town I’m going to purposely meet up with….
Back to Vulcan Motor Club. In the early 90s, in Boston, there was a business that rented exotica. Tried getting a Ferrari for the Marine Corp Ball. Price was reasonable, but the wait list was forever. Best of luck to your friends’ new venture!
A Dan why not a 911 or an M3. I know the GTR blows everything else out of the water but it just feels like a moreneck-snappingly intense version of Gran Turismo.

Enjoy the GTR, you’re a lucky guy. Vulcan Motor Club is doing very well. Like you said, there are downsides to renting- like not having access when you want it, and price. Vulcan membership has advantage on both accounts. There are members who could certainly afford their own fleet, but recognize the value, and appreciate the services and events that Vulcan offers.
Derek, good question. I’ve wanted a “Skyline” for years long before the Gran Turismo game (which I played for only the 2nd time yesterday with the nephews…that game is a rush!). There is a pristine “old school” Skyline in our town. Orangish-red, immaculate, the driver uses it for local SCCA events and he doesn’t drive like an arse on the public roads. Anyways, there are a million 911’s in my town in one version or another so that crossed it off the list for no other reason.
The M3. Almost same as the 911 reason but my local dealer has an M3 in one section of the lot and a Lexus IS-F in the other. I liked the M3 driving experience but everything about the Lexus’ interior and 4 doors and build quality got me. So I crossed them both off the list.
So – sorry for the long version – what made me get the GT-R was a combo of the above reasons…..and I like breakneck acceleration and cornering. The feature of turning three nobs/flips and going 0-60 in 3.2 is a feature my mother wants to try out!! I told her “anyone can do it” and it’s like she wants to prove me wrong, haha. Granted, the interior is borderline M3 basic (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and I was hoping Toyota would’ve released a Supra, but I’ll be happy parking it next to my new Ducati Streetfighter and 1198.
Bang for the buck, nothing touches a GT-R. The closest thing is the $40,000-more ZR1. You’d have to be a diehard Chevy fan to spend 40 large more and still not be able to pass the little car in front anywhere.
